London After Midnight is perhaps the most famous of Hollywood's lost films, and was perhaps the first American vampire movie. The last known copy burned in the late 1950's, and since then, film historians and horror aficionados have sought to reconstruct or resurrect this horror great. Sadly all that remains of the 1927 Chaney classic are film stills and memories. Playing a dual role, Lon Chaney Sr. donned perhaps his most frightening face to play 'The Man in the Beaver Hat,' a Scotland Yard inspector with a talent for hypnosis and disguise. Chaney's inspector disguises himself with a heavy black coat, immense top hat, sallow make-up and eerily symmetrical pointed teeth set in a fixed grin, perhaps hoping to hypnotize and frighten his prey into revealing the secrets of the murder that he is investigating. Chaney's portrayal of the character was so memorable, and so disturbing, that the character will forever be regarded as one of the great horror icons.
